NIAGARA joins forces with SUSTAFUELS Cluster to propel algae-based sustainable fuels in Europe

The NIAGARA Project is proud to announce its participation in the SUSTAFUELS cluster, an European alliance uniting ten Horizon Europe projects dedicated to advancing next-generation sustainable fuels. Through this collaboration, NIAGARA consolidates its role as a key contributor to Europe’s transition toward climate neutrality, with a particular focus on algae and waste-derived biofuels.

What is SUSTAFUELS?

SUSTAFUELS brings together the expertise, infrastructure, and innovation capacity of ten major EU research initiatives — including ALFAFUELS, ALGAESOL, CAPTUS, COCPIT, FUELGAE, ICARUS, SusAlgaeFuel, SUNFUSION and SUSTEPS — to accelerate the development, integration, and scaling of advanced biofuels, especially those derived from microalgae and biogenic waste. The cluster is structured to foster synergies, shape common strategies, and streamline pathways from laboratory to market.

NIAGARA’s contribution: from waste & algae to clean electricity

Within this cluster, NIAGARA offers its unique capabilities in transforming organic biogenic wastes and microalgae biomass into fuels suited for fuel cell electricity generation, closing carbon loops and enabling circularity.

With process optimization, NIAGARA aims to push the system’s carbon footprint into carbon-negative territory, while valorising waste streams and algae in an integrated European value chain.

Strategic benefits and ambitions

By joining SUSTAFUELS, NIAGARA strengthens its connections with complementary projects, ensuring:

  • Scale-up synergies — aligning pilot and demonstration efforts across the cluster
  • Cross-validation and benchmarking of technologies
  • Joint dissemination and outreach, to amplify societal impact
  • Policy alignment, feeding into European biofuels, CO₂ management, and circular economy strategies
  • For NIAGARA, this partnership is a milestone in achieving its vision: a continent-wide roll-out of advanced biofuel solutions that tie waste, algae, carbon capture, and clean electricity into one coherent, sustainable model.

Outlook & next steps

  • Over the coming months, NIAGARA will engage in joint planning workshops, roadmap definition, and coordination of pilot activities within SUSTAFUELS. Early joint publications, stakeholder engagement events, and cross-project calls are expected.
  • We look forward to contributing to, and learning from, this cluster of excellence, accelerating the deployment of advanced biofuels across Europe and supporting the goals of the European Green Deal, REPowerEU, and the Paris Agreement.
